A national energy communications campaign at a critical time in our journey towards sustainability, inclusive growth and a thriving economy

In November, the Energy Council of South Africa will be launching a comprehensive national media and communications campaign to support South Africa’s Energy Transition.

Our energy narrative has long been characterised by highly polarised views on technology choices and too often, ideologically opposed debate. This continues to undermine societal confidence in our readiness as an economy to take advantage of our Energy Transition.

Furthermore, energy topics are highly complex and technical, often filled with jargon and acronyms which confuses and alienates.

Using simplified messaging and repetition, a comprehensive and strategic national communications campaign is essential to raise awareness, create understanding and promote meaningful debate and discussions.

The Energy Council has invested in research, strategy and modelling work to provide content for informed communications. All information is verified and aligned with South Africa’s commitments to the UNFCCC Paris Agreement and climate legislation. We have identified and re-developed significant detail across six key technical areas critical to understanding the energy transition. The campaign incorporates three audiences with content tailored for audience sub-sectors.

South Africa is on the cusp of an exciting new era of enormous economic opportunity and technological innovation. The energy transition should not be viewed as a threat to South Africa’s economic wellbeing but rather as a chance to reinvigorate local manufacturing, develop local skills, create jobs, and address our local and global commitments towards climate change.
